Hello world!

20150328_105216 Horizontal Life Is Why

Greetings, and a warm welcome to my new blog, Quest for Health & Wellness, which explores and reports on innovative holistic options to conventional medicine.

When I experience something that heals my body or deeply touches my soul, I feel like I’ve just discovered a new way to breathe and yearn to help others by sharing my newfound knowledge far and wide.

My inspiration for creating this blog is my personal quest for health and wellness, a journey which indulges my passion to seek out a wide variety of health and wellness options, without focusing too narrowly on a specific niche, as we don’t focus on a sole facet of life.

I’ve endeavored to live a healthy lifestyle my entire life, however, last October I nearly died when my heart’s mitral valve chords unexpectedly broke.

I was first admitted to the hospital for what I refer to as the “Gilligan’s Island tour;” a routine, exploratory D & C, from which my OB/GYN planned to discharge me a mere three hours after arrival.  I’d never had surgery before, or even a broken bone.

Difficulty breathing in recovery led to emergency open heart surgery and an invitation to a three-week stay in ICU.

Daily visits from multiple teams of medical specialists, and my burning personal desire to understand what had happened to me, prompted me to begin an impromptu layman’s course on heart health and treatment. During those weeks, I asked my doctors and nurses about everything that was happening, and what I could do to assist in my own recovery.

Later, while recuperating at home, I continued my research, convinced this would help me advocate for myself, and it certainly did . . . I was able to present holistic healing strategies to my doctors . . . they listened and agreed to my recommendations!

I’ve learned so much, and continue to actively seek and experience opportunities to improve my health and wellness.  In doing so, I’ve realized how many options are available, and how little most people know about them.  This blog is intended to share my experiences and equip others with the knowledge I continue to learn.

My perspective is rather unique . . . a transition from the illusion of entitlement to a long, healthy life into recognizing the captivating appeal of cherishing every moment

My hope is that these tips educate and encourage you to experience the suggested healing remedies or recommend them to someone you love, as applicable.

The information contained in this blog is intended to be an extension of and complementary to traditional medicine, not as a substitute for your doctors’ advice and care.  I’m careful to communicate collaboratively, and with transparency to my medical team, and seek their buy-in before implementing alternative strategies.  When Eastern and Western medicine are used in combination there is tremendous benefit!

Finally, I’d like to share a brief story with you . . . one which made a huge impact on me at the beginning of this journey and continues to resonate.

While awaiting open heart surgery, my cousin Neal visited me.  Neal’s a pediatrician and Pediatric ICU Division Chief of Critical Care and Inpatient Medicine at the same hospital where I was a patient. He told me this: “I like working with children for the following reason: when children are sick, they get treatment and then say, can I go play?  On the other hand, when an adult has cardiac surgery, they tend to see themselves as heart patients, forever.”

I want to play!

    • I apologize! My site has been in a Beta test phase . . . look for many more educational blogs to come in the near future! I believe I re-posted a 4-part guest series I had written for the American Heart Association, all at once. which explains why you received the 4 emails simultaneously. Has this issue resolved? Debra
